Lead Testing

As of July 2008 children under 6 years of age enrolling in school need to have a blood lead test completed.  This requirement also affects students enrolling under CPI (homeschooling).  This is a coordinated effort between the Department of Public Health and the Department of Education.

What do I need to do to comply with this new regulation?

Have your child tested at your chosen health care provider.

In Iowa lead testing results are reported to the Bureau of Lead Poisoning Prevention.  The Bureau of Lead Poisoning Prevention will then coordinate with the school districts to cross-check a listing of enrolling kindergarten students with the electronic lead testing database maintained by the Bureau of Lead Poisoning Prevention.

My child was tested for Lead when they were small will this past lead test be enough or do they need to be tested again prior to filing out my paperwork?
The original testing should be enough.  Provided that the results were reported to the Bureau of Lead Poisoning Prevention.  If the test was done out of state and/or the Bureau cannot locate the test data that was reported, the child might need to be tested again, but you will be notified if that is the case.

I file my CPI with a religious exemption form for immunizations what does that mean for my child?
Your decision to have your child tested for lead is not affected by the Certificate for Immunization Exemption. Should you choose to have your child (NOT tested) exempted from the blood lead testing for religious reasons you will need to file a religious exemption certificate specifically for blood lead testing.
